How To Charge Your iPhone 12?

Posted in Technology   LAST UPDATED: NOVEMBER 12, 2021

In Apple, world advancements are very frequent, with every new Apple iPhone we see some radical change that breaks away from the traditional mobile phone experience and presents something completely new to the user.

With the new iPhone 12, Apple did something that couldn't have been anticipated. They removed the power adapter from the case and now the iPhone 12 only comes with the lightning-to-USB-C cable. Apple says that this was done to reduce the yearly carbon emissions by 2 million metric tons.

As relieved as that might make you feel right now, it loses its charm when your iPhone has a low battery and there is no adapter to charge it with.

So how to charge Iphone 12? Let's find out.

    Regular Old Adaptors

    how to charge Iphone 12

The most clear-cut way out of how to charge Iphone 12 problem is to just buy a USB-C charging adaptor. It is just a little device you plug into a power outlet with a USB-C port which goes with the Lightning to USB-C cable you got with your new iPhone 12.

These are actually very easy to acquire and if you’re getting an iPhone 12 you can very easily afford to spend a little extra on the adaptor. Apple sells one on its online store for Rs. 1900. And that shouldn’t be an issue for most Apple buyers.

Although if you’re inclined to get something a little more advanced, you can go for chargers from brands like Aukey and Anker, which assure faster charging. You just need to spend a little more money to get them. You can check out the features and buy adapters from Anker here.

Also, Apple has not yet transformed the iPhone to USB-C fully or removed ports altogether, so the iPhone 12 still has the typical Lightning charge port. This basically means that you can use your old lightning cable and the USB-A power adaptor to charge your phone. So if iPhone 12 isn’t your first iPhone you are good to go.

Another little thing you can do is directly plug the included Lightning-to-USB-C cable into your Mac laptop. That would also charge Iphone 12.

    Use the new MAGSAFE Technology

Apple's MagSafe technology is not as new as you might think. Before transforming the Macbook lineup to USB-C charging and data transfer, Apple used the term MagSafe for the cable connectors that were used to charge its computers.

These had magnetized tips that “snapped” into the magnetized MacBook charging ports and when disturbed they snapped out so that the laptops won’t crash on the floor.

Now Apple has brought a similar concept to the iPhone 12 lineup in the form of a magnetized disc that looks like a big Apple Watch charger. It snaps and attaches itself to the back of the phone. This MagSafe connector comes with a USB-C cord that charges at 15W

Which is The Fastest Way To Charge Iphone 12?

Except for iPhone 11 Pro and Pro Max, which shipped with an 18W USB C power adapter, all the other iPhones from Iphone 5 onwards have been shipped with 5W chargers.

But this fast charging feature has been supported in iPhones only from iPhone 8 onwards. This allows for a 50% charge in 30 minutes. But for this fast charging feature to work, there is a prerequisite, you must use an Apple USB-C-to-Lightning cable and one of the following adapters: Apple 18W, 29W, 30W, 61W, 87W, or 96W USB-C Power Adapter; or a third-party USB-C power adapter that supports USB Power Delivery, i.e. USB-PD.

The Apple iPhone 8 and all the iPhones above it support Qi wireless charging which charges them at 7.5W.

The MagSafe adaptor will charge your iPhone at 15W which is a good charging speed.

So, in the competition between a 5W adapter, the Qi wireless charging, and the MagSafe charger, the MagSafe charger will charge your phone with the fastest speed. But the question that arises here is if it's worth the price. If you need to charge your phone very frequently then you could probably get a MagSafe charger at Rs. 4500. Otherwise, an old charger or buying just a USB-C adapter at 1900 bucks can do the trick.

The money that will be saved can be wisely used at buying a more robust case for your iPhone.

What do you need to Buy?

If you own an iPhone with a lightning cable already, then you don’t need to buy anything. Just plug your lightning cable into the adapter you have and plug it into the socket. Plug your iPhone 12 on the other end and let it charge. Smooth.

If you want to get a MagSafe charger with all its “snapping” features which would allow you fast and safe charging then you will have to spend 4.5k on it.

Or you could just change your adapter and replace it with a 20W type C adapter which would also support the MagSafe cable. Thus at a slightly lower cost, you can get fast charging.

Also if you need longer cables for your chargers they are available at the apple store too. Cables as long as 2m and 3m are also available. You can get these at cheaper rates from Amazon.

There are a few questions regarding the MagSafe that come up very often. The first of which is whether the MagSafe works with a case. The answer is Yes, but only if you have a MagSafe compatible accessory.

If you have a non-MagSafe case you will be able to charge the device but the magnetic “snapping” features would not work. You can get these MagSafe Accessories from Apple.com and also from some third parties like Belkin and Otterbox.

The next question that arises is, what are the iPhone Models that support MagSafe charging. The answer is beginning from iPhone 8 all the iPhones support MagSafe charging.
