1. LBS as Pound-Mass or Pound

Derived from the Roman word "Libra", LBS is represented by 'lb' or 'lbs'. Internationally, the term is used to define the weight or mass of an object.

LBS stands for POUNDS in terms of weight. It is a mass unit used in the United Kingdom, the United States, Australia, and New Zealand. Actually, the name LBS originates from the Latin word Libra.

1 pound is equivalent to 0.45 kilogrammes, which indicates that 1 pound is equal to approximately half a kilogramme.

2. LBS as Location-Based Service

LBS or Location-Based Service is software used through mobile devices accounting for the device's geographical location. By using the GPS system of the device, it finds the location of the person. The service provider generally tracks the location of the user, when a user opts-in for services, without any manual entry.

There are a number of uses of the LBS on social networking sites. Other uses of LBS are for entertainment, personal life, education, etc. For instance, from the respective location, a person can enquire about the nearest hospital.

Methods of locating:

• Control Panel Locating: With the help of the control panel, find a position based on radio signal delay of the closest cell phone tower.
• GSM Locating: With the help of GSM built-in mobile phones, finding the location.
• Self-reported Location: Going through a map and locating themselves on the map. Today, it is known as check-in.

Applications

Location-based service or LBS can be used in a variety of things like:

• Emergency: By dialling the respective emergency number the caller's location will be automatically traced. In the cases where the user can not reveal his location due to some problem, LBS can be a big help.
• Navigation: The user's mobile location can be traced using this.
• Social media: Users have an option of check-in, from where they can share their location with their social media contacts.
• Mobile location-based gaming: A player has to check in with their location in games like city secrets and my town.
