The 'K' in KPMG

The first letter of KPMG, 'K' stands for Klynveld, which is the last name of Piet Klynveld.

Piet Klynveld worked as a bookkeeper in Amsterdam and he opened his own bookkeeping firm in 1917. Later, he made Klynveld Kraayenhof and Company by collaborating with Jaap Kraayenhof. Kraayenhof then left the firm, which had become the biggest bookkeeping firm in the Netherlands, after the death of Klynveld.

The 'P' in KPMG

The second letter 'P' in KPMG stands for Peat, which was the last name of William Barclay Peat.

Beginning his bookkeeping vocation at the mature age of 17, William Barclay Peat, started his journey at the firm Robert Fletcher and Company. It was here itself that he rose to the extremely highest levels of the organization. After he gained control over the organization he renamed it after himself.

The 'M' in KPMG

The third letter 'M' in KPMG stands for Marwick, which was the last name of James Marwick. You have probably made the simple guess that Marwick too was a bookkeeper. Both James Marwick and his companion Roger Mitchell were Scottish workers who establish Marwick Mitchell and Company in 1897, together.

The 'G' in KPMG

The fourth letter 'G' in KPMG stands for Goerdeler, which was the last name of Reinhard Goerdeler.

Goerdeler was a German bookkeeper born in May of 1922. In 1953, he joined the Deutsche Treuhand-Gesellschaft and moved gradually up to the post of Chairman. He looked to extend their reach worldwide from his post of authority. Then, in 1979 he framed the bookkeeping firm Klynveld Main Goerdeler which was later shaped to form KPMG in 1987. Thus, finally, he became the director of KPMG.
