What is a National Cadet Corps?

National Cadet Corps or NCC is the Military cadet corps of India that provides basic military training to the students of schools and colleges. It comprises the Navy, Army and Air Force. The main aim of the NCC is to groom students into disciplined and patriotic citizens. The headquarters of the NCC is in Delhi and its directorates are located in many different states of the country. As of May 2022, Lieutenant General Gurbirpal Singh is the Director-General of the National Cadet Corps (NCC). "Ham Sabh Bhartiya Hain" is the official song of the NCC, which is written by Sudarshan Faakir. There is no compulsion on the trained NCC students to join active military services after completing the training although that does remain valour of nationalistic pride.

Motto

"Unity and Discipline" is the Motto of the NCC and in living up to this motto, it becomes a cohesive force bringing together the youth hailing from different parts of the country. The NCC grooms the youth of the country into united, disciplined, and secular citizens of the nation.

NCC Flag

The NCC flag was instated in 1954. There are three colours in it, namely Red, Dark Blue and Light Blue. The three colours symbolise the three services of the Corps. The red indicates the Army, deep blue is the representation of the Nave and the light blue colour depicts the Air Force of India. The centre of the flag has three letters NCC encircled by a garland of lotus.

NCC Certificates

The NCC offers three types of certificates based on the level of training. A, B, and C certificates are available. Let's investigate them.

• Certificate 'A' - The NCC 'A' certificate is awarded upon completion of the initial training level. This training is conducted over the course of one to two years at the secondary school level.
• Certificate 'B' – NCC Certificate 'C' is awarded to senior wing credits with a minimum of 75% attendance in NCC training.
• Certificate 'C' – The NCC 'C' certificate is the highest certificate awarded to trainees in their third year of training who have attended at least two national trainings.

How to Join NCC?

To join the NCC, one must:

• First, accidentally If NCC is in your school or college, visit your Associate NCC Officer (ANO) to discuss joining. Done.
• If your school doesn't have an NCC, you must visit another school or college with one. This doesn't mean you must transfer schools. Take NCC from Open Admission in schools and colleges. Or, visit the Group Headquarter Unit and meet the Permanent Instructor (PI) Staff to join NCC. So, they'll help you choose the school or college to join NCC by taking Open Admission for NCC, or they'll provide you admission from their unit, but you'll need a signed (NOC) Non-Objection Certificate from your school or college's principal.

Brief History

• The NCC was first started in Germany in 1666.
• Pandit Hradaya Nath Kunjru, in the early 1940s, suggested the establishment of a cadet organization in schools and colleges at the National Level in India.
• It came into existence in India after the National Cadet Corps Act was accepted by the then Governor-General, on 15 July 1948.
• The Girl Division of NCC was established in 1948 to provide equal opportunities to school and college going girls.
• The Air Wing was added in 1950. And in 1952, the Naval Wing was added to NCC.
• After the 1962 Sino-Indian war, the NCC training was made compulsory.
• It again became voluntary in 1968.
